Comments: Its frequent transfer throughout the country makes it extremely difficult to define accurately the natural limits of distribution (Ref. 12524, 13337). Probably confined to Lake Kariba (Ref. 12524, 13337, 36532, 54048, 54454, 57142, 58363), the Middle Zambezi (Ref. 12524, 13337, 32831, 36532, 54454) and its tributaries (Ref. 12524, 13337). Known from the rivers Hunyani (Ref. 52307, 54357) and Sanyati (Ref. 50024). Also collected from the Upper Zambezi (Ref. 44514).

Etymology: Oreochromis: Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  mortimeri: Named for M.A.E. Mortimer, a fish culturist who conducted a great deal of productive fish culture research in Zambia between 1951 and 1965 (Ref. 13337).
