Comments: Restricted to the basins of the Black Sea and the Sea of Asov (upper reaches of the Dnieper and the Don, Donets and Kuban rivers, as well as the small rivers flowing into the Black Sea (Ref. 26334, 58030). This has extended its range to several areas within the country where they have become locally established (Ref. 45022); including Volga (Ref. 58028). EurRus

Etymology: Eudontomyzon: eu-, a Greek intensive (good, well or very); odontos (Gr.) tooth, referring to numerous radially arranged teeth of E. danfordi; myzon (Gr.), to suck (borrowed from Petromyzon), referring to their suctorial behavior. (See ETYFish);  mariae: In honor of Berg’s second wife Maria (née Ivanova), “who examined many thousands of river lampreys from the mouth of the Neva and other streams, falling into the Finnish Gulf”.
