Kown from the San Juan drainage including the Lake Nicaragua (Ref. 36377). Recorded from Managua (Ref. 4537). Third most frequently found cichlid in the Great Lakes of Nicaragua (Ref. 7335). Type locality, Lake Nicaragua, BMNH 1867.9.23.37 (holotype of Hypsophrys nicaraguensis, 14.1 cm SL) (Ref. 74403). Also Ref. 13677.
