Comments:
Known from mainland New Zealand (Ref. 8879). Common around northern New Zealand but not extending as far south as D. brevicaudatus (Ref. 9258). Most abundant in shallow bays and estuaries (Ref. 9258). Observed to aggregate in caves and in rocky reef archways (Ref. 12951). Considered a nuisance to net fishers and currently of no commercial value (Ref. 9258). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 5578, 6871, 33390, 45524.
