Comments: Known from Sabah in Bettotan, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Tawau and Bongon (Ref. 56613). Observed from Lahad Datu (Danum Valley) in stagnant or slow moving clearwater pool along headwater streams (Ref. 56613). Collected also within the Kinabatangan basin from lowland forest streams and ox-box lakes. Found in the shallow parts of ox-box lakes among the flooded grass banks and among the submerged leaf litter and tree roots in the forest streams (Ref. 56613). In Tawau, numerous individuals inhabit quiet murky pools along the coast in oil palm plantations (Ref. 56613).

Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect.
