Comments: Reportedly introduced in 1975 from South Africa for experimental hybridization as well as to improve the yield of Chlorella cultivated in seawater tanks (Ref. 13364). Reportedly introduced from Thailand in 1966 (Ref. 1739). No specimens have been reported from the local natural environment (Ref. 37616).

Etymology: Oreochromis: Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  mossambicus: From the Greek words oreos=of the mountains and chroma=color; mossambica describes the geographic area, Mozambique, to which the species is native (Ref. 79012).
