Type locality of holotype of Varicorhinus axelrodi: 'rivière Loukoula, lieudit "Porte du Mayombe", 9 km en aval de Mpounga, Congo Brazzaville (4°20'S-12°26'E)' (Ref. 53571). Known from tributaries of the lower and central Kouilou River (Ref. 53571, 81639). Map in Ref. 81639 also shows presence in the Loémé River, but this is not confirmed in the text.
