Comments: Known only from the middle and upper rio Tocantins and its tributaries (Ref. 49598). Type locality, Rio Maranhão, near mouth of the rio Tocantinzinho, border of Niquelândia and Campinaçu, 13°5'25"S, 48°19'08"W, Goiás (Ref. 50838).

Etymology: Ancistomus: Greek, agkale, agkalos = hook, something curved + Greek, stoma = mouth.

Issue
In Ambruster et al., 2015 (Ref. 99824), no characteristics were found to separate Ancistomus spinosissimus from A. micrommatos and A. spiloma, and these may represent the same species.
