Present in the Cunene basin (Ref. 11970, 43912, 120641), the Cubango (Ref. 11970, 43912, 120641), the Cuando, Lake Calundo (upper Zambezi basin) (Ref. 11970, 43912) and the (upper) Zambezi (Ref. 11970, 120641). Also reported from the southern Congo River basin (Ref. 120641) but without further details. Type locality of the holotype of Schilbe steindachneri: "Cunene, Angola"; type destroyed in March 1978 in a fire (Ref. 43912).
