Recorded from the Chalakudy river, part of the Western Ghats, Kerala (Ref. 79567), Tambraparani river system, Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Cauveri and Chinnar river systems, Chimmony and Peechi-Vazhani WLS, Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Bangalore adn Kolar districts, Karnataka (Ref. 92228). Etymology: Oreochromis: Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335);  mossambicus: From the Greek words oreos=of the mountains and chroma=color; mossambica describes the geographic area, Mozambique, to which the species is native (Ref. 79012).
