Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) > Lophiiformes
(Anglerfishes) > Ogcocephalidae
Etymology: Ogcocephalus: Greek, ogkos, ou = hook, curvature (Ref. 45335); rostellum: Named for its small rostrum (rostellu = dimunitive of the word ) (Ref. 40824).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Marine; demersal; depth range 28 - 228 m (Ref. 40824). Subtropical; 37°N - 17°N
Western Atlantic: North Carolina to Florida Keys in the USA; also in Jamaica.
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 19.0 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 7251)
Morphology | Morphometrics
Rostrum resembling the shelflike condition seen in notatus; for 4 cm SL or less, a short median horn is developed on the rostrum. It has narrower mouth and lower number of scales in the cheek lateral line series, usually 8 and in the premaxillary series 3. Pectoral fin ray usually 13. Has a flatter disk with less elevated cranium compared to parvus (Ref. 40824).
