Early larvae deep-bodied and strongly tapered, becoming highly robust and stout; head and eyes large; snout blunt; distinct pigment pattern with basibranchial blotch that is absent in putative L. tenuiformis larvae; Br2 photophores form at about 5.0 mm. Pigmentation: Preflexion: embedded in otic region; at upper and lower jaw tips; 1 or 2 at lateral midline above pectoral fin base; on inner surface of pectoral fin base and adjacent trunk; above gas bladder; by 3.7 mm, on ventral midline below gut, on opercle, on terminal gut section; on some pectoral fin rays near bases. Flexion: blotch at basibranchial region; embedded in preopercular region; usually 2-3 in lateral midline series; embedded series above spinal column in late flexion stage. Postflexion: lateral to basibranchial region; up to 6 in lateral midline series and 9 in spinal column series; on pelvic fins in some. Sequence of fin development: caudal, pectorals, dorsal and anal, pelvics.
