The first about 10 rays of the dorsal fin are elongated and form in advance of all other fin rays. The head is large with extremely large jaws. Long, recurved canine teeth develop at 4 mm. Few small preopercular spines form during flexion at about 5 mm length. (See larval pictures below from Ref. 1698).
