Diagnostic characters: small melanophores covering most of body and dorsal fin; globular shape, spines; precocious fin development. Pigment: initially, heavily pigmented except caudal peduncle, area around anus, first three anal rays, and snout. Sequence of fin development: pelvics and caudal (prior to hatch), dorsal spines, dorsal rays, pectorals, anal (although caudal development is initiated prior to hatch, it is the last to complete development).
