| Elongate and slender; strongly compressed by about 12 mm; dorsal and anal finlets discernable by 9.5-10 mm; at 20-40 mm SL, upper and lower jaw are slightly elongate but beak never forms; with growth a slight beak develops; heavily pigmented except light on lower part of head and none on fins before transformation. Notochord flexion occurs before hatching. Persistent preanal finfold; unpigmented area on ventrolateral region of caudal peduncle. Pigmentation: Larvae: head, body and gut heavily pigmented except none ventrally on head, none ventrally on gut before about 14 mm, and light pigment on otic capsule and opercular area; fins unpigmented except light pigment on pectoral fin base. Juvenile: head lightly pigmented ventrally and ventrolaterally; light pigment along caudal rays. Sequence of fin development: caudal, dorsal and anal, pectorals, pelvics (caudal forms at hatching). | ||||
