Day 1-6: Embryological development with pronephric tubules clearly seen on each side of the embryo and progressively differentiated into pronephros and mesonephros; Day 7: Embryo slipped out of the surrounding egg membrane as a yolk-sac larvae with an identifiable air bladder; Day 8: Pronephros is heavily innervated with veins and capillaries, along with pseudolymphoid tissue; Day 9-11: Pronephros reduce in size; other developing structures like the air bladder and cervical vertebrae crowd out the pronephros.

The pioneering work of R.L. Carson (1932) sought to prove that the pronephros and the head kidney are the same structure, and that a functional pronephros appears to dissolve away at a later stage (Ref. 119520).
