Dorsal fin insertion above anal fin ray 5-7 (postanal myomere 2 or 3) through postflexion stage; high anal fin ray count; little or no pigment (usually none) over hindgut; compared with Engraulis mordax - relatively deeper body, shorter preanal length, smaller size at given developmental stage, and more lightly pigmented. Pigmentation: Preflexion-flexion: on isthmus; 1-6 dorsolaterally along gut anterior to gas bladder; on gas bladder beginning at about 7 mm; few on ventral margin of hindgut, decreasing in number during flexion stage; rarely 1 or 2 anteriorly over hindgut; rarely 1 or 2 over end of hindgut; onventral margin of tail; under notochord tip, becoming aligned along developing caudal fin rays. Postflexion: internally on brain after 15 mm; along cleithrum after 11 mm; internally on urostyle and lower hypurals; along vertebral column posteriorly after 16.5 mm; increasing on caudal fin ray. Sequence of fin development: dorsal, anal, caudal, pelvics, pectorals.
