Diagnostic characters: 2-3 small posterior preopercular and up to 4 small opercular spines; series of small melanophores along ventral midline of tail; expanded ventral melanophore on tail between myomeres 23-25, visible until postflexion stage; no pigment along dorsal and lateral surfaces of body prior to settlement. Sequence of fin formation: pelvic (3.2-4.5 mm); caudal (3.3-5.9 mm); pectoral (3.9-4.5 mm); dorsal (4.3-9.6 mm); anal (4.3-9.6 mm). Larvae settle on the bottom at length greater than 9.6 mm BL.
