  Etymology of generic noun  
Genus name from Latin 'squalus' meaning shark (Ref. 6885, 27436). Latin, squalidus = pale, weak (Ref. 45335).
  Etymology of specific epithet  
  from ETYFish
micro-, from mikros (Gr.), small; cephalus, from kephale (Gr.), head, allusion not explained, perhaps referring to its short, rounded snout compared with other sharks then included in the catch-all genus Squalus. (See ETYFish)
