L. ayresi was originally described as P. plumbeus but Günther realized plumbeus had already been used for a European lamprey and substituted ayresii (Ref. 1998).

petra (Gr.), rock or stone; myzon (Gr.), to suck, referring to their suctorial behavior (adults attach to rocks during nest building and mating). (See ETYFish)
