Max. size:  16 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 0 - 43 m
Distribution:  Pacific Ocean: Ryukyus, Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands and Taiwan to the Hawaiian, Marquesan, and Pitcairn islands, south to the Samoan and Austral Islands; Marianas and Marshalls in Micronesia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-14; Dorsal soft rays (total): 20-23; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 16-18
Biology:  Found almost exclusively on exposed seaward reefs (Ref. 205). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Feed mainly on polyps of Pocillopora. Solitary or in pairs. Oviparous (Ref. 205), monogamous (Ref. 52884). Form pairs during breeding (Ref. 205).

Country info:  First record for the East Indies with two specimens (BPBM 40885:5.4-6.8 cm SL) collected in the aquarium fish trade in Samar (Ref. 80396).
