Max. size:  12 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 8 - 100 m
Distribution:  Western Central Pacific: Indonesia and northern Australia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 3-3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 25-26; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 14-14. Male with a narrow white bar behind the eye, broad dark margins on the pelvic and anal fins, and slightly orange coloration on the upper and lower margins of the caudal fin (Ref. 31113). Description: Characterized by female with dark brown color, nearly blackish; tail yellowish; narrow white bar behind eye; gill cover with faint whitish or bluish patch; pale pelvic fins, dark-edged; anterior lateral line scales 32-37; predorsal scales 17-21; depth of body 29.2-31.9 % of SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Inhabits coastal patch reefs on soft bottom slopes. Highly territorial and aggressive. This and related species have been known to bite the camera housings of divers and kill aquarium tank mates (Ref. 9710). Solitary or in pairs (Ref 90102).
