Family:  Serrasalmidae (Piranhas and pacus), subfamily: Serrasalminae
Max. size:  20.1 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 230.0 g
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  South America: Amazon and Orinoco River basins and north and eastern Guiana Shield rivers.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Rarely captured. Prefers to inhabit the upper reaches of main rivers. Stomach content analysis showed that its food consisted mainly of seeds and to a lesser degree, morsels of fins (Ref. 12225).
