Family:  Percidae (Perches), subfamily: Etheostomatinae
Max. size:  7.8 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 3 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Roanoke, Neuse, and Tar River drainages in Virginia and North Carolina in the USA. Also in extreme upper James River drainage in Virginia and New River drainage in West Virginia and Virginia, which are probably recent introductions.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits fast gravel and rubble riffles (adult), gravel-bottomed pools and runs near riffles (young) of small to medium rivers.
