Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 100 - 2014 m
Distribution:  North Pacific: Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk to the Gulf of Alaska (Eschmeyer, pers. comm.). Reported from British Columbia, Canada (Ref. 11980).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6-7; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 4-4; Vertebrae: 18-18. Illicium rather short; escal bulb bearing a somewhat flattened anterior appendage with 4 black flattened flaps, and bearing a rather long posterior appendage (Ref. 559). Further characterized by subopercle with posterodorsal margin indented to deeply notched; length of ventral fork of opercle 30.5-37.3% SL; ratio of lengths of the dorsal and ventral forks of opercle 0.42-0.54; absence of epibranchial teeth; presence of teeth on pharyngobranchial II; upper jaw teeth 19-42, lower jaw teeth 18-36; teeth on vomer 4-9; dorsal fin rays 5-6; anal fin rays 4; pectoral fin rays 14-17; head length 37.7-48.6% SL; head depth 39.1-54.1% SL; premaxilla length 28.4-34.1% SL; length of lower jaw 41.3-54.1% SL; length of illicium 23.9-39.0% SL (Ref. 86949).
