Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 3000 - 5400 m
Distribution:  Northeast Atlantic.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 78-78; Anal soft rays: 58-58. M. herringi differs from the other species of the genus by the following combination of characters: head long with elongate, pointed snout, skull length 6.4% TL, rostral fang strongly hooked with distal part in a nearly right angle to dorsal profile of skull, anal fin origin below myomere number 28, and no lateral, subdermal spots of pigmentation.
