Family:  Scopelarchidae (Pearleyes)
Max. size:  13.8 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 4740 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Atlantic, Indian and Pacific: in tropical and subtropical waters. Absent in the Mediterranean and eastern tropical Pacific. Widespread throughout the Eastern Central Atlantic but recorded mainly between 30°N to 15°N; unknown from the Gulf of Guinea.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 0-0; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 20-25
Biology:  Oceanic, mesopelagic or bathypelagic species (Ref. 6601, 58302). Most adults have been taken in hauls to depths considerably in excess of 500 m (Ref. 10755). Adults prey on other midwater fishes (Ref. 6691).
