Remarks 'Big-eye', i.e., this species has large eyes with a 26-32% diameter; 'Mackenzie' refers to the Mackenzie River of the Northwest Territories in Canada; 'herring' from Old English 'hæring' from prehistoric West Germanic 'kheringgaz' where 'kher' = hoar, i.e., silvery gray - the color of the herring (p. 281 in Ref. 11979).
