Remarks 'Leather', i.e., animal skin dressed for use (p. 681 in Ref. 11978), alluding to the leather-like appearance of this variety's skin as a result of the absence of scales (Ref. 1998); 'carp' from Old French 'carpe' from Latin 'carpa' (p. 98 in Ref. 11979).
