Remarks 'Lake' from Old French 'lac' from Latin 'lacus' of the same source as Gaelic 'loch' and Latin 'lacuna', i.e., hole, pit, pool (p. 316 in Ref. 11979); 'lamprey' from Old English from Latin 'lampreda' from 'lampetra', i.e., stone-licker since the lamprey holds on to rocks with its jawless sucking mouth (p. 316 in Ref. 11979). Also Ref. 3881.
