Remarks "weatherfish" comes from the fish's supposed ability to forecast stormy weather. What happens is that the drop in barometric pressure that goes with storm systems causes a reduction in the pressure exerted upon the swimbladder of the fish. This allows gas in the swimbladder to expand, apparently causing discomfort for the fish, making it agitated and swimming up and down; may even make the fish burp or even worse (Ref. 44091).
