Fish affected: Discus, Angelfish  
Symptoms: Excessive mucous production on the skin and gills, respiration difficulties and a darkened body color. The fish also exhibits difficulty in breathing and can be found either resting at the bottom or surface.  
Treatments: Examine the fish for signs of any specific pathogen. If this is not then case, do a 50% water change every 24-48 hours with FMC (1 liter of Formaldehyde (37%) (or 100 ml); 3.7 gm of Malachite Green oxalate (or 0.37 gm); 3.7 gm of Methylene Blue (or 0.37 gm)--Dose: 1.0-1.2 ml/100 l tank water or 25 drops/100 l or 1 drop/gallon) and Nifurpirinol (Dose: 10-15 mg/100 l for an unlimited time (or as instructed).) based treatment for secondary bacterial and parasitic infections. After every water change, add 50% of FMC and Nifurpirinol dose. Add Metronizadole (Dose: 400-600 mg/100 liter for 3 days) in case of secondary infection involving Spironucleus/Hexamita. Treatment should be continued for 3-5 days and then let the fish recover (proper food). In the case of a persistent bacterial infection treatment should be Oxytetracycline (Dose: 3-4 gm/100 l for 2-3 days, water change after treatment) + Neomycine (Dose: 2-4 gm/100 l for 3 days.) for 2 days.  
Prophylaxis: Avoid putting housing together discus fish or angel fish from diferent breeders, from different localities, regons and country. Purchase fish from a quarantine or a fish that have become immune to the disease. Examination of sick fish for a possible wellknown pathogens. Breeders must adjust the water quality before starts selling Angel or Discus fish. The breeders should be advised to acclimate the fish to lesssoft or acid water that is more suited to the needs of the trader.
