Occurs mostly in east USA in Atlantic, Great Lakes, Mississippi, and Gulf basins as far west as Wyoming, and Brazos River in Texas, but absent from Florida and south Georgia; isolated population in the upper Pecos, New Mexico. Introduced elsewhere (Ref. 86798). Transplanted in Colorado River drainage in Texas (Ref. 5723). Type locality: Wallkill River, New York (Ref. 79012). Also Ref. 10294.
