Recorded from the Ishima Island, Tokushima Prefecture (Ref. 38029) and Shirahama, southern Japan (Ref. 37690). Mabuchi and Araga (1997) (Ref. 26193) suggest P. japonicus to be nomen dubium and that comprise 2 different species(sieboldi and japonicus known Inhabits protected, shallow rocky reefs.
