Recorded from the Ishima Island, Tokushima Prefecture (Ref. 38029) and Shirahama, southern Japan (Ref. 37690). Mabuchi and Araga (1997) (Ref. 26193) suggest P. japonicus to be nomen dubium and that comprise 2 different species(sieboldi and japonicus known Inhabits protected, shallow rocky reefs. Museum: RMNH 1219 (lectotype of Labrus rubiginosus Schlegel), 2172 (paralectotypes of L rubiginosus); Sagami Bay, AMS I.18498-001; Futami, AMS I.20031-001; Wakanoura, ANSP 26059-60; Suraga Bay, MSM 75-216; Kochi, BSKU 2210 (Ref. 26203).
