Comments: Recorded above the Fall Line throughout the Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee, and much of the Mississippi River drainages (Ref. 10294). Transplanted into Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania and headwaters of Savannah River in South Carolina. Locally abundant (Ref. 5723, 10294).

Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335);  zonale: zonale meaning banded (Ref. 10294).
