Known from Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea and its watersheds, Mediterranean Sea, European Black Sea watersheds, European Mediterranean Sea watersheds, Anatolian Mediterranean Sea watersheds, Anatolian Black Sea watersheds and Asi Nehri/Orontes watershed. Threatened due to overfishing. Highly migratory species, listed on Annex I of the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea (Ref. 58342).
