Comments: Known from the marine lower Congo, Pool Malebo, middle Congo River, Kasai, Sankuru, Lake Mai-Ndombe, Lake Tumba, Ruki River drainage, Ubangui, Uélé, Itimbiri, Aruwimi, Lomami, Wagenia Falls and Lualaba (Ref. 108775). Type locality of the lectotype of Hepsetus microlepis: 'DRC: Ibali, Lake Leopold II (Lake Mai-Ndombe); 2°03'00"S 18°11'00"E' (Ref. 108775).

Etymology: Hepsetus: Greek, epsetas, -e, -on = boiled, but there is the following sentence: "oí epsetoi" = certain fishes, and also could be related to "psetta" = grouper (Ref. 45335);  microlepis: The species name microlepis is derived from the Greek 'mikros' meaning small, and 'lepis' meaning scale (Ref. 108775).
