Stout; gut slightly sigmoid, extends to about midbody; foregut relatively thick, becoming somewhat saccular; head large and broad; eye large but narrow, with a small conical appendage and with a slanted orientation; pigment scanty; transforms at small size (about 10.0 mm); Br2 photophores begin to form at about 5.8 mm; PO series the first to form at transformation; similar to Benthosema suborbitale which has cleithral pigment, a shorter gut, and lacks pigment on pectoral fin rays. Pigmentation: Preflexion: none. Flexion: by about 6.0 mm, a pair at lower jaw tip and a patch on pectoral fin blade; by 7.0 mm, above developing gas bladder. At 8 mm number of finrays: C 18-19; D 12; A 16; P 13-14 (Ref. 65). Postflexion: some larvae >9.0 mm have 1 on each side of foregut. Sequence of fin development: caudal, anal, dorsal and pelvics. Larvae present all year round in the California Current region (Ref. 31442). |
