Remarks 'Lamprey' from Old English from Latin 'lampreda' from 'lampetra', i.e., stone-licker since the lamprey holds on to rocks with its jawless sucking mouth (p. 316 in Ref. 11979); 'eel', i.e., snakelike with smooth slimy skin, no pelvic fins, with median fins confluent around the tail, from Middle English 'ele' from Old English 'æl' and akin to Old High German 'al' (p. 397 in Ref. 11978).
